Corrosion sensor for structures

The corrosion sensor CorroDec 2G shows whether the corrosion front has reached a defined depth in the concrete. Passive, requiring no power, and read out by RFID, it is designed to last the lifetime of the structure.

Why the corrosion sensor

Evidence of progress, not an estimate

Moisture shows that a component is at risk. The corrosion sensor answers the next question: how far has it progressed. It reports when the corrosion front reaches a defined depth, well before anything becomes visible on the surface.

Two-stage wire monitoring

Two wire levels at different depths show whether the corrosion front has reached the first or already the second level. A suspicion becomes a documented condition.

Passive via RFID

The sensor operates without its own battery. The reader supplies it with power wirelessly and reads the values in three to five seconds.

No power source in the concrete

Because no battery can run flat, the sensor stays functional for the entire lifetime of the structure.

Deep readout possible

Up to 10 cm with the standard reader, up to 45 cm with the advanced reader, and up to 100 m into the structure with an external antenna.

New build and retrofit

Cast in during new construction or retrofitted by core drilling in existing structures. Designed for both routes.

A basis for refurbishment planning

A documented corrosion progress supports the decision on whether to refurbish, when to refurbish and which area comes first.

Operating principle

How the corrosion sensor is read out

Unlike the wireless crack sensor, the CorroDec 2G is read out on site with a reader. Because it operates passively and without power, it delivers reliable values even after years in the concrete, feeding directly into your structural documentation.

  1. 01

    Installing

The sensor is cast into new builds or retrofitted into existing structures by core drilling, with a defined concrete cover.

  2. 02

    Reading out

The reader supplies the passive sensor with power wirelessly and transfers the measured values in three to five seconds.

  3. 03

    Assessing

The condition of both wire levels and the temperature feed into the structural documentation and the refurbishment planning.

Installation

Installed by core drilling

The sensor is set into a core drill hole and anchored in the component. This works for new construction as well as for retrofitting existing structures, without cabling and without a construction power supply.

  • Installed without affecting the load-bearing structure
  • Suitable for new construction and retrofitting in existing structures
  • On request, Infrasolute handles the installation

Simulation

Read out wirelessly in 3 to 5 seconds

The reader supplies the passive sensor with power wirelessly and transfers the measured values. Simulate a readout: moisture, corrosion status and temperature appear just as they feed into the structural documentation.

Two variants

Rarely alone, usually in a pair

The CorroDec 2G is available in two versions. In practice, they are often combined: one delivers the early indicator, the other confirms the progress. For the sister variant, see the moisture sensor.

Corrosion sensor

Monitors across two wire levels whether the corrosion front has reached a defined depth, supplemented by temperature.

Moisture sensor

Measures electrical conductivity and temperature in the concrete and so indicates moisture ingress.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What exactly does the corrosion sensor measure?
The sensor holds two wire levels at different depths. Once the corrosion front reaches the first level, that becomes visible at readout, and the same applies to the second level. The measurement is supplemented by temperature. You can see not only that a component is at risk, but how far the process has already progressed.
What does the scope of delivery include?
The scope of delivery depends on the project and the number of sensors, and includes the matching reader. We clarify this as part of the project inquiry and prepare a matching quote.
How is the sensor installed?
There are two routes. In new construction, the sensor is positioned on the reinforcement before concreting and cast in. For existing structures, retrofitting is done by core drilling. The minimum concrete cover above the sensor is 15 mm for concrete C20/25, reducible to 10 mm for C40/45.
How does the readout work and what is the range?
The sensor is passive and requires no power. A reader supplies it with power wirelessly and reads the measured values in three to five seconds. The range is up to 10 cm with the standard reader, up to 45 cm with the advanced reader and up to 100 m into the structure with an external antenna.
How do I access the measurement data?
Unlike the wireless crack sensor, the CorroDec 2G is read out on site with a reader. Because it operates passively and without power, it has no battery that can run flat, and delivers reliable values even after years in the concrete. The readout data feeds into your structural documentation.
Can the sensor be retrofitted into an existing structure?
Yes. In existing structures, the sensor is installed by core drilling and then sealed professionally. The minimum concrete cover above the sensor is 15 mm for concrete C20/25, reducible to 10 mm for C40/45. This is particularly useful after a refurbishment, because it lets you document the success of the measure over the years.
Why is the price given on request?
The price depends on the number of sensors and the matching reader. Corrosion monitoring is usually part of a concrete monitoring concept that we tailor to the structure. That is why we prepare the quote on a project basis via the project inquiry.
What is the difference between the corrosion sensor and the moisture sensor?
The moisture sensor measures electrical conductivity and temperature in the concrete and so indicates moisture ingress, the trigger. The corrosion sensor monitors via two-stage wire monitoring whether the corrosion front has reached a certain depth, the consequence. Both variants are often combined: one warns early, the other confirms the progress.
