Detect corrosion before it becomes visible

Moisture and chlorides destroy concrete and reinforcement from the inside. With passive, energy-free CorroDec 2G sensors, you detect capillary moisture, chloride fronts and corrosion risk early enough to act in a targeted and cost-efficient way.

Why moisture and corrosion monitoring

Why moisture in the component is so dangerous

Concrete and steel form an economical and resilient combination, with one natural weak point: moisture and chlorides destroy the protective passive layer of the reinforcement steel over time. The damage develops unnoticed inside the structure, long before spalling and cracks become visible on the surface.

Loss of the passive layer

Chlorides and persistent moisture dissolve the corrosion-protective passive film on the reinforcement steel. The steel begins to rust, initially completely hidden.

Early warning instead of a refurbishment case

Once pitting, spalling and cracks become visible, the refurbishment effort is already considerable. Monitoring detects corrosion activity before it becomes a hazard.

Moisture trend in the concrete

The moisture sensor measures the electrical conductivity and temperature inside the component and delivers a reliable trend of how the moisture develops.

Chloride and corrosion risk

The corrosion sensor monitors, using a continuous sensor wire in two levels, whether corrosive influences reach the reinforcement steel.

Preserving the value of the asset

Whoever knows the condition can refurbish in a targeted and cost-efficient way instead of across the board. This sustainably protects the substance and the value of the structure.

Evidence and control

The monitoring documents the quality of a new build and objectively tracks the success of a repair over years.

Simulation

The moisture traffic light in the component

Follow how the capillary moisture moves into the concrete and the chloride front reaches the reinforcement steel. The traffic light shows the corrosion risk at every stage, exactly what the sensor captures in the real component.

Condition

Dry

No risk

The concrete is dry, the passive layer of the reinforcement steel is intact. Sensor wire level 1 and 2 are both in order.

How CorroDec 2G works

A passive, energy-free early warning system for concrete

The CorroDec 2G sensors are installed at the at-risk points of the structure, either during construction or retrofitted. They are passive and energy-free and have no cable connection to the outside. This ensures an extremely long service life and rules out harmful substances entering the structure along a cable. Only the reader supplies the sensor with energy when it is queried.

  1. 01

    Corrosion sensor

A continuous sensor wire is destroyed by corrosive influences. Read out are wire level 1 in order yes or no, level 2 in order yes or no, and the temperature in the concrete.

  2. 02

    Moisture sensor

Two stainless steel rings measure the electrical conductivity and temperature in the concrete and deliver a reliable trend of the moisture development.

  3. 03

    RFID readout

The reader works on the RFID principle. In 3 to 5 seconds it delivers condition and readings, without any cable and without a battery in the sensor.

Stress corrosion cracking

Moisture and chloride are the precondition

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) only occurs when two things come together: permanent tensile stress in the prestressing steel and a corrosive medium such as chloride or moisture. The second condition is the one that can be measured directly in the concrete, before it takes effect. The damage itself then proceeds inside the structure and only becomes visible through the deflection of the superstructure.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between moisture monitoring and leak monitoring?
Moisture and corrosion monitoring with CorroDec 2G monitors moisture and corrosion activity inside concrete, that is, hidden, slowly progressing damage. Leak monitoring uses a leak detection cable to detect escaping water within seconds and alerts immediately. For active water leaks, leak monitoring is the right choice, for the substance of the concrete, moisture and corrosion monitoring.
Can the sensors be installed retrospectively?
Yes. CorroDec 2G sensors can be installed before concreting in a new build, during a repair, or retrospectively by core drilling. This means existing structures can also be retrofitted with the monitoring without major effort.
Do the sensors need power or a cable connection?
No. The sensors are passive and energy-free and have no cable connection to the outside. The reader only supplies the energy when it queries the sensor using the RFID principle. This ensures a very long service life and prevents harmful substances from entering the structure along a cable.
How are the sensors read out?
Either offline with a handheld reader directly on site in 3 to 5 seconds, or online around the clock. For remote readout, a system extension transmits the data via Narrowband (NB-IoT), so condition and trend are retrievable remotely at any time and an alert is triggered if a threshold is exceeded.
How deep in the concrete can the sensors sit?
As standard the read range is up to 10 cm, with the Advanced reader up to 45 cm. Using an external antenna unit, which sits remote from the sensor in the concrete via a cable, installation depths up to 100 m are possible. This allows sensors to be read out safely and reliably even in inaccessible locations.
Can this also be used to monitor stress corrosion cracking?
Stress corrosion cracking itself is hidden inside the structure. Infrasolute uses a laser-based deflection monitoring system for this, which captures the bridge geometry to sub-millimetre accuracy. If a prestressing strand breaks, the deflection changes measurably and the system raises an alert. Combined with the moisture and corrosion sensors, this builds a comprehensive picture of the structure's condition.
